Fiat- Punto Evo
Placement of pedals in Fiat- Punto Evo is
one of the important changes. Apparently, placement of clutch, brake and
acceleration pedal was found a little inappropriate earlier which is improved
for better in new versions. 5-speed manual gearbox in Punto specifically is not
the one to pump 90 PS of power quite effectively with 1.3 L Mutlijet engine.
This gearbox modification is more important now than ever before. Fiat Motors
India has recently changed 1.3 L Punto's diesel engine to generate 90 PS from
earlier 76 PS. So, this is one improvement expected of, from new Fiat Punto. Exteriors
of Fiat- Punto Evo and slight changes in plush interiors are definitely there,
redesigned headlamps and grille placement makes way for exterior makeover.
Fiat Punto Evo will carry two petrol engine
options of 1.2 L and 1.4L petrol motors. 1.3 L multijet diesel engine will
continue to power hatchback as usual. There are some strong rumors doing rounds
that Italian car giant might consider 1.6 L diesel powertrain for Fiat Linea
specifically some time in future. Fiat Punto Evo is a small family car that is in
production since 2009, replacing Fiat Grande Punto. This car easily
accommodates 5-passengers and comes as a 3-door or 5-door hatchback. Fiat-
Punto Evo comes with a great selection of engines that delivers excellent mileage.
Moreover, Punto Evo is priced very reasonably and proves the best example for good
value for money on all fronts.
Inside, Punto Evo has high quality
materials as well as boasts plush and supportive seats. Cabin offers enough
space and comes with impressive level of standard equipment, including air
conditioning and MP3 playback through Blue&Me entertainment system. Additionally,
exterior body shape of car is very attractive and flaunts a restyled grille.
Fiat- Punto Evo handles very well with hi-tech
steering system and good suspension system. Car delivers smooth and remarkable
driving experience, with little clamor pollution entering the cabin. It comes with
5-year warranty and proves excellent vehicle.
Background
Fiat Punto Evo is available with a wide

Fiat-
Punto Evo Review by Autocarbazar.com Editorial team
In 2009 Fiat Motors launched Grande Punto.
However, it was in 2012 that they launched updated Punto with more features.
First launched in 2009, Punto has initially looked same and for once we think
it should look the same! Maserati like nose is most attractive part of its
design and rear also looks good with muscular styling.
2012 model of Fiat- Punto Evo features Oceanic blue
paint-job that looks great. However, take a closer look and you will see a
small change, 2012 Punto Evo now has improved ground clearance (Punto 1.2- 195
mm and Punto 1.4 and 1.3 D - 185 mm). For those buyers who want sporty look 90 PS
Sport model with decals and contrasting side-view mirrors add a classy touch.
Inside car you will see stylish cabin. What
has changed in model 2012 is new grey interiors, fabric seats, carpeted
flooring and door trims. Dual tone dashboard now decorates entire range. When
it comes to features, Fiat- Punto Evo scores high in this regard, it boasts
equipment like steering mounted audio controls, Blue&me and follow me home
headlamps. When it comes to space, car has enough legroom but headroom is in
short supply due to coupe like design. 90 PS Sport variant also has red contrast
stitching.
1.2 petrol has 68 PS and performance is
adequate at best. Diesel is far better and we say it is the pick of range. 76
PS multijet diesel motor performs better and there is enough torque of 197 Nm @
1750 rpm. Whether you are driving in city or on faster highway? Performance is
strong and this is the options we would reccomend. 90 PS petrol engine that is most
powerful that you can buy with Punto Evo and as expected it is a delight for every
car lover. It is fast and complements car perfectly. New variant is a 90 PS diesel
engine. Fiat- Punto Evo gives 15.2 km/l for 1.2 P and 20.3 km/l (ARAI) for
diesel, petrol running Fiat- Punto Evo 1.2 loses some of the mileage as you
have to down-shift a lot to enjoy performance.
Steering feedback of Fiat- Punto Evo is
brilliant and exactly just what you expect from a steering- neither very light
nor very heavy. In city, it is light and along with a light clutch, driving in
heavy traffic and parking is a breeze. Turning circle of car is just 5 M which
means you will not face any problem during U-turns!
Fiat- Punto Evo also features an
independent wheel suspension with McPherson Struts at front and Torsion Beam,
Helical springs at rear.
What's
new in Fiat- Punto Evo
MultiAir technology
Making debut on Fiat Punto Evo, 1.4
MultiAir is the revolutionary head of a new family of engines fitted with
MultiAir technology made and patented by FPT - Fiat Powertrain Technologies.
Technology will be slowly rolled out across all Fiat engines.
Available in two different power options
(105 PS and 135 PS), new engine represents a real departure point from current
petrol engine scene. As compared with a traditional petrol engine with same
cubic capacity, MultiAir engines give significant improvement in power and
torque, as well as much lower fuel consumption and emissions.
Inside MultiAir is new electrohydraulic
valve management system that enables low fuel consumption by regulating air
directly via engine intake valves without using throttle and harmful emissions
(via combustion control), as well as upgraded performance. As befits a
flag-bearer for downsizing concept, MultiAir is a multi-faced technology that
is easily applied to all petrol engines and may potentially be invented for
diesel running engines.
135 PS 1.4 MultiAir Turbo guarantees Fiat
Punto Evo all performance and temperament of a sporty, well-balanced car
designed for customers who want good driving impression and mileage. Thanks to
turbocharger, torque delivery of 135 PS engine is optimum under every condition
and ensures exceptional acceleration and vigorous thrust at all revs, marking a
new benchmark for petrol engines. New 135 PS engine's top speed and time to sprint
from 0-100 km/h puts it at top of the supermini class: 200 km/h (205 for Sport
variant) and just 8.5 seconds. Nice performance is integrated with respect for
environment (Euro 5 approval) and good mileage rate. Excellence is reflected in
particularly low CO2 emissions, equal to 129 g/km, with a combined fuel
consumption of just 5.6 litres every 100 km.
Balance and temperament are also attributes
of 105 PS 1.4 MultiAir power unit. Engine sits in middle of its reference
market, where it signifies best choice. 105 PS MultiAir also complies with Euro
5 standards and records 134 g/km of CO2 (combined fuel consumption is just 5.7
litres every 100 km). Performance is excellent: from 0-100 km/h in just 10.8
seconds and top speed of 185 km/h.
All this shows that MultiAir has all
necessary features to be as revolutionary in the field of petrol engines as JTD
and MultiJet were in their day for diesel engines. Fiat Motor's long tradition
in engines continues.
Second-generation MultiJet
All Fiat Punto Evo diesel engines are fitted
with next-gen MultiJet Common Rail injection system. This advanced solution can
regulate high engine pressures (up to 1600 bar) without being tied to engine
speed or quantity of fuel injected.
In 1.3 MultiJet Euro 5 versions, system
uses innovative common rail injectors that, thanks to a balanced hydraulic
servo-valve, are able to control the quantity of diesel injected into combustion
chamber, with faster and more flexible sequence of injections than was earlier
possible. By reducing the amount of time between injections, these injectors improve
fuel introduction to chamber and therefore make diesel combustion process slower
with positive effects for consumption, emissions, NVH and handling. In fact,
new common rail injector on Euro 5 engines cuts consumption and CO2 on approved
cycle by around 2%, while at the same time reducing emissions.
Second-generation MultiJets are hence the recent
development in Common Rail injection system which, after JTD (1997) and
MultiJet (2003) engines, gives Fiat yet another first in this field.
1.3 MultiJet is available in Euro 4 (75 and
90 PS) and Euro 5 (75 and 95 PS) versions, the latter coming with a particulate
filter and Start&Stop as standard. Additionally, turbo is carried out
either by a fixed geometry turbocharger (75 PS) or a variable geometry
turbocharger (90 and 95 PS). Euro 5 versions have next-gen turbochargers that integrated
with new 2nd generation MultiJet injection system ensure best
possible turbo function at any engine operating level with torque delivery at
low revs up to 25% higher than on Euro 4 versions.
Performance levels of 95 PS
second-generation 1.3 MultiJet (Euro 5) are well worth a mention: top speed of
178 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 11.7 seconds, and consumption of 4.2 l/100 km and 110
g/km of CO2 emissions (in combined cycle). When combined with Dualogic gearbox,
consumption falls to 4.1 l/100 km and emissions to 107 g/km.
Ultimately, Fiat Punto Evo range retains
brilliant 120 PS 1.6 MultiJet Euro 5 with DPF from previous model. With this
engine, Fiat- Punto Evo can touch top speed of 193 km/h (Sport version) and sprint
from 0-100 km/h in 9.6 seconds. Excellent performance also comes with reduced
consumption and emissions: in combined cycle, these figures are 4.5 l/100 km
and 119 g/km of CO2 respectively.
Start&Stop system and Gear Shift
Indicator
With respect for environment and mileage still
in mind, new Fiat Punto Evo includes Start&Stop system. Coming as standard
on all new Euro 5 petrol and diesel engines and from 2010 also on 120 PS 1.6
and 1.2 Euro 5, device temporarily switches off engine and restarts it in order
to decrease fuel consumption and noise levels. In these situations, which are
typical of heavy traffic in urban areas and when stopped at traffic lights,
when control strategy permits, system automatically cuts out engine in order to
cut fuel consumption and emissions by up to 15 percent for an urban route and
3.5 per cent over an NEDC-type cycle.
Furthermore, Gear Shift Indicator (GSI)
linked to Start & Stop system is a kind of co-pilot that discreetly advises
drivers when they need to shift gear, leading to a more fuel-efficient use of
engine. For example, GSI may suggest shifting to a higher gear, by means of a
signal on instrument panel, in order to allow engine to burn a leaner mixture,
i.e. containing less fuel, or changing down a gear to make best use of
available torque.
Blue&Me-TomTom
Technological innovation also comes in the
shape of latest Blue&Me platform which debuts on Fiat Punto Evo.
Blue&Me-TomTom is an integrated infotainment system whose practical colour
touch-screen allows to manage phone calls, satellite navigation and all driving
information. This device is the result of partnership between Fiat Group
Automobiles and TomTom, European leader in portable navigation systems and
teams up with other car's systems thanks to Blue&Me system developed with
Magneti Marelli.
Blue&Me-TomTom is placed in an easily
accessible and safe position (without loose cables) from which it can
nevertheless be removed for other purposes. This system can also be operated
from steering mounted controls and by voice recognition. There is an exclusive
"Car Menu" to let you show information on car and all connected
devices: "eco:Drive Info": real-time information on your driving
style and suggestions for reducing environmental impact and optimising
consumption by changing gear and accelerating appropriately to suit the nature
of route; all trip information on a single screen: distance travelled,
consumption and range; fuel reserve warning and directions to nearest fueling
station; places of interest, Fiat service centres and methane & LPG filling
stations; management of mobile phone connected to Blue&Me: calls,
information, contacts and call log.
Lastly, on this new Fiat car, you can also
get Blue&Me (including hands-free function with Bluetooth interface and
advanced voice recognition, USB port, MP3 player and SMS message reader) and
Blue&Me Nav which adds a satellite navigation function at competitive
price. Innovative Blue&Me system has won prestigious international awards
and has been a great commercial success. It is fast approaching one million
units installed on various Fiat Group Automobiles models.

Consumers will surely like Fiat – Punto Evo
if they love environment.
Respect for environment
At Fiat Motors, innovation also means
taking care of environment. In fact, environment is one of the key issues
driving product development and ensures that Fiat range of cars is greenest across
the Europe. Fiat Punto Evo is not the exception. MultiAir engines are proof of
that. Compared with a traditional petrol engine of same size, they generate
more power (up to 10%) and torque (up to 15%), while using significantly less
fuel (up to 10%) and emitting less carbon dioxide (up to 10 per cent),
particulates (up to 40 percent and NOx (up to 60 per cent).
In same way, 2nd generation
MultiJet diesel engines offer more precise combustion control, with benefits
for consumption, emissions, NVH and handling. This has been thrived through a
new common rail injector that controls introduction of fuel to combustion
chamber which, for Euro 5 engines, cuts fuel consumption and CO2 on approved
cycle by around 2 per cent, while at the same time decreasing hazadousl
emissions.
Still with reduced consumption and
emissions in mind, new Punto Evo offers Start&Stop, system that temporarily
switches off engine when car is stationary and then restarts it. Start&Stop
arrives as standard on all new Euro 5 petrol and diesel engines.
Two bi-fuel systems (petrol/methane and
petrol/LPG), which unquestionably give Fiat Punto Evo the most complete and
eco-friendly engine range in segment are further evidence of Fiat Motor's
commitment of protecting environment. What is more, Fiat Motors is an
undisputed global leader in segment of original dual-fuel petrol/methane cars
(OEM) and more recently of dual-fuel petrol/LPG cars.
Two 'green' versions have a specific 1.4 8v
Fire engine with 77 PS (for example, Natural Power one delivers 70 PS, when
operating on methane and is Euro 5-approved) manufactured by Fiat Powertrain
Technologies and designed especially to combine fully with two fuel supply
systems.
Methane running engine is not only the most
ecological bi-fuel engine in B segment producing just 115 g/km of CO2 but is
also the most economical thanks to unprecedented running costs of under 4 euros
per 100 km. Among other benefits, methane running engines benefit from highest
government incentives in Italy: 5,000 euros if joined with a contribution for
scrapping old car. It should not be forgotten that Fiat Punto Evo Natural Power
assures a range of more than 1,000 km on combined cycle and 1,200 km on
extra-urban cycle and when operating on methane, it guarantees excellent
handling and good performance: top speed is 156 km/h and sprints from 0-100
km/h in mere 16.9 seconds.
Next there is LPG-fuelled variant in
addition to Natural Power one, manufactured using Fiat's extensive experience
in alternative fuels to respond to extraordinary growth seen in market. Fiat
Punto Evo GPL carries a record range of 1,500 km in extra-urban cycle, running
costs almost 50% lower than petrol equivalent, as well as decreased consumption
(7.4 l/100km in combined cycle) and CO2 emissions (119 g/km).
Staying on environmental theme, Fiat Punto
Evo customers can use "eco:Drive", the innovative software that uses
USB port to analyse driving style and help to reduce fuel consumption and
emissions.
How does it work? As you drive,
"eco:Drive" collects information on car efficiency and your driving habits.
All data are sent through Blue&Me infotainment system's USB port to a
standard USB drive, from where they can be read on a computer. Customers can
then take a careful look at fuel consumption and emissions for each trip
(creating their own eco:Index) and get tips on achieving more eco-friendly
driving style. They can actually enhance their score by progressing through a
series of tutorials: people who are keen to become more eco-responsible drivers
can expect 15 percent improvement in driving style, which means cutting carbon emissions
by 15 percent and annual fuel saving of 120 to 200 euros.
This system is available for Fiat 500,
Grande Punto, Bravo, Qubo and Croma models, and over 50,000 customers have
already downloaded it free of charge from www.fiat.com/ecodrive website in
first eight months since launch. More than 22,000 users use it all the time to
monitor driving style, taking part in a lively exchange of views on
"eco:Ville", an online community where you can share commitment to
eco-friendly driving. Great public success but also a concrete commitment,
"eco:Drive" tips have made it possible to save more than 1,900 tonnes
of CO2 in Europe - enough energy to light up streets of a city like Geneva for
20 months.

Fiat-
Punto Evo Interiors
Interiors of this car are derived from the sibling
Fiat Linea. Inside of Grande Punto is ergonomically designed with grey and
black dual tone interiors in Emotion and Emotion Pack variants. Like Linea,
interiors are clean with decent fit and finish of plastics and Punto logo stitched
on seats and floor mats. Orange backlit instrument cluster of Grande Punto has
four dials with digital odometer and trip meter which even reads out trip time,
mileage, trip time for two trips. Grande Punto has same single CD Blaupunkt
music system with 6 speakers which is present in Fiat Linea with Blue&Me
package available in Emotion Pack variant.
Tilt-adjustable steering and height
adjustable driver's seat makes it possible to fine-tune driver's seating for
maximum comfort. Slim A-pillar and large windshield increases front visibility,
however thick C-pillar and small rear windshield reduces rear-end visibility
causing problems while parking in tight spots.
Fiat-
Punto Evo Exterior
Fiat Punto Evo has undergone several
external changes to both front and rear, such as new bumper with improved
technical and functional areas: for example, two radiator grilles combined in a
single trapezium-shaped area with two side attachments containing direction
indicators, while lower grille incorporates new circular fog lights with
adaptive cornering function. You can tell different variants apart by front
bumper: sporty trims have hexagonal-mesh grille and dark line with embedded
Fiat logo; Comfort Line versions have horizontal-mesh grille and chrome-coloured
line. Compared with previous car, headlights stand out more and are technically
supreme as well as offering daytime running lights function at side and
different framing (dark for Sport Line versions, chrome-coloured for Comfort
Line versions).
At rear side, there is a new bumper
incorporating number plate; innovative taillights with a guide light that can
be seen at night in shape of a pair of brackets opening on left and closing on
right; central Fiat logo that is also used to unlock boot; and new Punto logo
with a different coloured dot depending on engine. Original side mouldings mix
into new-look front and rear parts (3-door versions are improved by
chrome-coloured line featuring car's logo).
Latest design has expanded car to a total
length of 406 cm, meaning that it preserves winning characteristics of occupants’
comfort. Other external dimensions remain same, with width of 169 cm, height of
149 cm and wheelbase of 251 cm.
Lastly, there is a range of 13 colours,
seven of which were not available for previous car: Grigio Intellettuale (Tech
house Grey), Blu Temerario (Acid jazz Blue), Blu Illusionista (Brit pop Blue),
Nero Rubacuori (Progressive Black), Verde Avventuriero (Unplugged Green),
Bianco Radioso (Easy listening White) and Rosso Sfrenato (Tango Red).
Fiat-
Punto Evo Safety
Fiat Punto Evo is designed and manufactured
to get highest levels of safety. Car boasts a large number of safety equipment
(standard or optional depending on market and trim), starting with those
dedicated to passive safety: 2-front-airbag, 2-front-side-airbags, front and
rear window bags and a driver knee bag (Fiat Punto Evo is one of the few cars
in this segment on which this bag is standard on all trims), assuring
protection for occupants in nine areas of possible contact in case of a crash.
Fiat Punto Evo is also one of the few cars
in its class equipped with adaptive 'cornering' front fog lights which switch
on automatically with dipped beams according to steering angle.
Fiat-
Punto Evo Features
Finally, Fiat Punto Evo has technologies which
ensure highest levels of acoustic and climate comfort for occupants which is
key for preventive safety: from two-zone automatic climate control to a number
of features which make driving easier such as cruise control, rain sensors and
parking aid system.
Fiat-
Punto Evo Engine
Fiat Punto Evo is available with two petrol
engines viz. 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre and diesel variant is 1.3-litre mill which
is based on multijet technology (with 75 PS and now even an option of 90 PS).
1.4-litre FIRE (Fully Integrated Robotised
Engine) is a petrol running engine which even powers Fiat Linea. It is 1368 cc,
16-valve engine which cranks up 90PS@6000rpm and generates maximum torque of
115Nm@4500rpm. This is a contemporary short-stroke high rpm engine which has
lower torque and higher rpm. Engine is highly improved with very low NVH levels
even while idling. This engine feels a bit sluggish at low rpm however it comes
on song after it crosses 3000rpm. Drive car above 3000 rpm and you will have no
complaints about engine's performance.
Turbo lag on multijet engines is what most
people have always had an issue with - be it Fiat Grande Punto, Linea, or even
Tata's like Indigo Manza or Indica Vista which share this powerplant. Thanks to
additional sweet-15 horses, 90 PS Grande Punto did feel a little better than 75
PS multijet and will no doubt have better in-gear acceleration thanks to extra
torque. One would not find much difference over 75 PS Grande Punto in city
traffic, but this hatch will definitely shine on faster highways where extra
punch will kick in and making overtaking easier than before. Drive Fiat Punto
Evo above 1800rpm and you will love the way the turbo spools and engine propels
you away.
Fiat Motors has used 8-valve 1172 cc, 68 PS
petrol engine which is same engine that powers Tata Indica Vista SAFIRE which
we recently tested. Indica Vista even has same Fiat gearbox, however due to
difference in final drive, we found Grande Punto is far more suitable for city
driving. In quarter mile run, Grande Punto 1.2 took 21.4 seconds to hit 402m
mark and reached 100kph in mere 19.4 seconds. No doubt, a better figure could
be attained if Fiat Punto Evo was a tad lighter. It tips the scales at 1140kgs
compared to Indica Vista Drivetech4 SAFIRE which is 1035kgs, making Grande
Punto 1.2 Emotion a whole 105kgs heavier.
Fiat-
Punto Evo Fuel Economy
Fiat Punto Evo is available as petrol and
diesel variant. Both these options are treat to drive as they deliver
commendable mileage rate. Petrol variant delivers 12 – 16 kmpl per volume of
fuel. On the other hand, diesel engine is made to run 14 -19 kmpl/litre of
fuel. It also worth mention that mileage rate is less on congested city roads
while mileage increases on faster interstate highways due to absence of red
lights and traffic.
Fiat-
Punto Evo Performance
Performance levels of 95 PS
second-generation 1.3 MultiJet (Euro 5) are well worth a mention: top speed of
178 km/h, 0-100 km/h in just 11.7 seconds, and consumption of 4.2 l/100 km and
110 g/km of CO2 emissions (in the combined cycle). When integrated with
Dualogic gearbox, consumption falls to 4.1 l/100 km and emissions to 107 g/km.
Eventually, Fiat Punto Evo range retains
brilliant 120 PS 1.6 MultiJet Euro 5 with DPF from previous model. With this
engine, Fiat Punto Evo can run at a top speed of 193 km/h (Sport version) and
go from 0-100 km/h in 9.6 seconds. Excellent performance also comes with decreased
consumption and emissions: in combined cycle, these figures are 4.5 l/100 km
and 119 g/km of CO2 respectively.
